Vauxhall have captured the services of FIA WTCC front-runner Fabrizio Giovanardi to join their British Touring Car Championship assault next season.

The Italian driver, who was in contention for the FIA WTCC crown with Alfa Romeo until the final round of the year in Macau last weekend, will be joined by BTCC race winner Tom Chilton at the VX Racing team.

"For sure I'm really excited about joining VX Racing. Personally, I think they are the best team in the UK series," said Giovanardi. "James Thompson, my teammate at Alfa Romeo in the world touring cars, who used to drive for VX Racing, has also told me good things about the team. I think next season will be good, it will be an experience and also a challenge. It will be difficult for me at first because, other than Silverstone and Donington, I don't know many of the British circuits. But I am a professional driver and I can learn quickly. I'm feeling confident and although it is a new series for me, it is still touring cars and I have raced against top drivers Matt Neal and Jason Plato before. I want to win with VX Racing and I want to do my best for the team. I am going to put a lot of effort in and give my best to help Vauxhall win the championship."

Giovanardi leaves the FIA Touring Car Championship after six seasons (five of them at Alfa Romeo and one at BMW Team Italy-Spain) in which he claimed two European titles (2001 and 2002) and 17 victories.
