Motorsport Enthusiast's Gift Guide

If you’re like the staff here, the holidays bring mixed emotions. Sure, we all love to open gifts, but how much thought really goes into socks or pajamas? What car enthusiasts really want can’t always be wrapped or bought at the mall. As we travel the world to cover shows and events, we are constantly on the lookout for cool things to fill our own offices and garages. We’ve assembled a list of some of the best stuff we’ve come across in the past year. And they all beat the hell out of PJ’s.

1. Vintage Shell Oil T-shirt

Never let it be said that you can’t find good gifts in a corporate identity line. Perusing one of the several Shell Oil online stores found via the corporation’s website, we stumbled across this stylish retro Shell logo T-shirt amongst the expected polo shirts and golf umbrellas.

Blue with gold neck and arm bands, this handsome shirt harkens back to vintage motorsport, but would also look cool worn out to a club.

2. Simpson Pit Shoe

In the past, we’ve featured driving shoes. However, this year we’re recommending those with an automotive footwear fetish consider the Pit Shoe by racing gear staple Simpson. Oil resistant and with a toe cap for added protection, this shoe is great for use while turning wrenches in the garage or for regular use. Stylistically, the tire tread sole is a great touch.

As with the Model T, you can have the Simpson Pit Shoe in any color so long as it’s black. A one shade model this may be, but black is perfect for hiding grease and dirt stains that might be encountered while wrenching on your ride. And, at $44.95 the Pit Shoe won’t break the bank.

3. Corvette C5-R 1/10 Scale Remote Controlled Race Car by Tamiya

Remote control cars are a great way for kids to drive before they’re legal, as well as a guilty pleasure for even licensed drivers. Tamiya, one of the biggest R/C car manufacturers out there, is currently discounting 1/10 scale versions of the successful Corvette C5-R modeled after the successful Le Mans racecar for your R/C driving enjoyment. Complete with the yellow and white livery used at Le Mans and in the ALMS, this Corvette will allow you to relive the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the comfort of your own cul-de-sac, all for a measly $100.

4. Jean Richard ALMS Special Series Paramount Sebring Watch

If you follow the American Le Mans Series, you’ve probably seen the co-branding at races with watch-maker Jean Richard. Watches go with car racing like a hand and a glove, and the Paramount Sebring features a fantastic automotive appearance with black carbonfiber face, brushed steel casing and silver-stitched black leather band.

The Jean Richard time piece features mechanical movement with automatic winding, good for 48 hours of reserve power when the watch isn’t in motion.

5. Martini Racing Jacket

If you’re into vintage racewear, we may have found the perfect gift. When thinking of the great racing liveries, that of Martini Racing ranks near the top. Via the German auto accessories webstore Maxpart-Racing.de, we’ve found an authentic replica of the Martini Racing jacket worn in the 1970’s at racing venues around the world.

Made of Nylon with a poyester lining, the jacket features an authentic 1970’s cut and even the extendable pit pass holder.

7. F1 06 for Playstation 2

There are those car enthusiasts who buy video game consoles just for the driving games. Such enthusiasts may also invest hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in steering wheels, pedal sets or even racing pods to make the driving experience that much better, having zero intention of blowing up aliens or bopping some furry creatures with a mallet in more pedestrian video games. For those people, and the car guys who simply get visitation rights to their kid’s PS2 console, we offer F1 06.

One of the most realistic approaches to Formula 1 we’ve seen, this game allows you to be your favorite F1 team and compete at all of the tracks. Virtually fight for the F1 championship, hit pause, scratch yourself, grab a beer and then win the championship. It’s all doable via this video game and the PS2 console sitting in your living room.

8. Le Mans Signs T-shirt from N138.net

We’ve found one of the subtler Le Mans-themed T-shirts we’ve seen as of late over at the website of N138.net, a UK purveyor of automotive casual wear.

Available in grey graphite or blue, this shirt features a design inspired by the parking lot signs at le Circuit. The shirt is subtle enough to be worn without attracting attention except from veterans of the 24 Hours. It’s under the radar and way inside… just how we like it.

9. 1/8 Scale #007 Aston Martin DBR9 Le Mans Racecar from the Amalgam Collection

There are model cars, and then there are fine scale replicas. The 1/8 scale replica of this year’s Le Mans-contesting #007 Aston Martin DBR9 racecar by the Amalgam Collection falls into the latter category. With giant size and minute detail, this replica weighs in at 2750 pound sterling before you even think about a conversion.

That’s a hefty investment, though the most serious collectors won’t even blink at the idea. And, it’s hard to argue against perhaps the sexiest racecar to round Le Mans last June.

10. Final Drive Gear Table Lamp from the Renault F1 Team Collection

Talk about over-engineering…. This table lamp from the Renault F1 Team Collection online store is made from a final gear gearbox and stem of the Renault Formula 1 racecar. Made from vacuum remelt steel with pre-preg carbon fiber, it likely won’t light your den any faster, but it’ll look a whole lot cooler while it tries… all for a cool 3,174 Euros.

11. Last Open Road Novel Series

Don’t worry if you’re not normally the type who curls up with a good book before bed. Burt “BS” Levy is such a colorful storyteller that you’ll soon find it difficult to put down his Last Open Road books. The series revolves around the road racing scene of the early 1950’s, perhaps the most glorious period in racing history. If you’ve ever wondered where some of the stereotypes about certain cars and their owners were born, The Last Open Road and its subsequent volumes should paint a pretty clear picture.

Levy is amazing at intertwining a genuine historical perspective on the cars, drivers, and attitudes of the day with a lighthearted and entertaining storyline. Adding to the authenticity of each of the stories is Levy’s own experience as an SCCA road racer and all-around car enthusiast.

There are four books in the series: The Last Open Road, Montezuma’s Ferrari, The Fabulous Trashwagon, and Tivoli’s Ghost. If you don’t think you have time for a novel, start with Levy’s short-form book, The Potside Companion, intended specifically for time-out reading spells. Many racetrack souvenir shops carry these books, but don’t expect to find them at your local Borders. Your best bet is to pick it up via the author's website.

12. Audi R10 TDI 1:43 Scale Model by Spark

Whether a serious model car collector or just a casual enthusiast looking for some desk décor, the new Audi R10 TDI by Spark in 1:43 scale is a sure bet. Audi’s revolutionary diesel-powered racecar dominated this season with a perfect record of wins, though it’s just now at the holiday season that any scale models of the R10 have been readily available. Model car manufacturer Spark is first to market with examples of both Le Mans-competing Audi R10s, and we found them in-stock and available at our favorite New Jersey Model shop EWA Cars.
