Driver Diary: Romeo Kapudija-Mosport 200

I started my trip out with the usual bump and grind of air travel and with the usual delays at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. Once on my flight, I carefully studied a track map of the famed Mosport International Raceway. Since I have never been to Mosport and heard that the track was very quick, I wanted to learn as much about the track as I could before getting there.

Upon arrival to the circuit the next day, it was nice to see all the familiar faces of the SpeedQuest team and mechanics, and even those of our competitors in the series. I immediately noticed Adam Pecorari’s RV sitting on the hillside of the paddock area.

When I arrived at the RV, Adam was hanging out watching the F1 qualifying and the weather reports on satellite TV. Adam informed me that we should expect rain for the weekend and potentially for the race, and upon conferring with the team, we made the decision to do the test day in the rain. I have driven quite a few cars in the rain, but driving the Mustang Cobra SVT in the wet was going to be a challenge! We were both happy to get out there and get that much needed track time.

The following day, we were lucky enough to get time on the track without the rain. I was out in the first session and I could not believe how quick the track really was. Turn 2 is a very technical corner that is down hill, off camber, and very fast. If you turn in to early or late you would find yourself off line and possibly in some trouble as some of our competitors found out.

Adam was in the car for the second session and was quickly up to speed. Since he had been to Mosport before, I relied on his feedback and input to help learn the track in short order so not to be to far behind my competitors.

Later in the day Adam was in the car for Qualifying. He did a great job and turned some quick laps that put us in 9th position, however Adam was really down on himself because he thought he would have been able to put us higher in the order. No matter how baldy he felt, I was still impressed with his effort in the session, and he makes for a great teammate!

On Saturday we had a full day to just hang out and go over data from our previous sessions to prepare for the race ahead. We talked about our strategy and watched videos from our on board camera. Race time approached rather slowly this weekend, and right before the race everyone was looking for Adam. With the race about to start, I found Adam sound asleep in his RV. Good thing I knew where to find him!

The race started and Adam was running some really good lap times. He was driving a good race and got the #58 SpeedQuest Racing entry up to 5th position in a hurry. He stayed in P5 until a very timely full course yellow allowed him to turn the car over to me.

Unfortunately we lost a few positions in the pits, and restarting 14th I knew I had to fight hard to get those positions back. After some solid wheel-to-wheel action, and some minor rubbing, I was able to get the car up a couple of positions.

I managed to ward off some fast cars and held my ground to finish 7th. I think the outcome would have been a bit different if we didn’t loose so many places during the stop. However, I am very happy that we finished and we look forward to our upcoming race in Alabama.

Stay Tuned!!
